Children of Immigrants Rise to the Top
Lauren Kim
Borne from the seeds of faraway
They dance amongst the winds
From raging infernos to gentle breezes
Willed by the heaving seas
Rejected from their ancestry
Enlightened by dreams of future
They furrow into the rich soil of a promising land
Absorbing drink, spreading roots
Great sun beats down upon them
Threatening to steal precious moisture
Sustenance and air from their lungs
Craggy leaves and stunted stems
Is pitifully all they have to present
How they persevere
Emerging from barren cracks
Green amongst gray
Luscious life in the most detrimental of situations
How they must fight
Battle their very existences, conceal their backgrounds
Deny and erase centuries of history
Is how they may survive
In a barren land who refuses to allow their lives.
